Default Can Other People See Snuffleupagus?

Me and my friend were wondering last night wether or not other people can see Snuffleupagus. Like, I could have sworn that I heard he was only Big Birds imaginery friend, but I also could have sworn I've seen other charachters in the show interacting with him.

Is it possible that its something along the lines of only little kids and Big Bird being able to see him? Or is it truly the case that only Big Bird can see him?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, as its been something thats been puzzling my little group for some time now.

Given the fact that the viewers can see him, it is quite likely that he isn't simply a figmint of one character's imagination. Also, if I remember correctly, he was in several scenes where Big Bird was not present. I am fairly cearten that he is mostly independant... in fact, while I watched that show, I only thought he was Big Bird's best friend, or something.

I think when I was younger, I remember snuffleupagus was talking with with one of the adults, but like ever since they've been promoting that little fuzz ball elmo, and not grover because everyone knows grover is the better of the monsters. hes cooler then the honking things!

Default Everything I ever needed to know, I learned from kindergarden. And wikipedia.

Well, according to Aloysius Snuffleupagus' entry at wikipedia:

Quote:
For many years, Big Bird was the only character on the show who saw him (he only came along when Big Bird was alone). The other characters teased Big Bird when he said he had seen the Snuffleupagus, because they didn't believe there was such an animal, often despite evidence to the contrary (such as an oversized teddy bear that Snuffy had left behind). This was modeled in part on the imaginary friends some young children have.

...By the mid-1980s, the storylines had the adult characters becoming increasingly frustrated with Big Bird using Snuffleupagus as a scapegoat whenever something went wrong while they were out of the room. In one episode, newspapers on Sesame Street carried the front page headline, "Snuffy's got to go!"

This running gag ended with the Nov. 18, 1985 episode of Sesame Street (early in the series' 17th season), when the adults finally met Snuffy. The adults have been driven to the brink after another incident gone wrong, and give Big Bird an ultimatum: tell this "Mr. Snuffleupagus" good-bye once and for all, or else. Out of options and excuses, Big Bird and Snuffy tearfully say their good-byes in Big Bird's nest area. One of Snuffy's tears falls onto Big Bird while they embrace, leading Big Bird to realize that if he can even feel the water from the tears, Snuffy must be real. While the two are embracing, the adults enter the room and see that Snuffy is definitely real. After Snuffy introduces himself, Big Bird does an "I told you so" routine, prompting the adults to apologize profusely.

The Children's Television Workshop decided on this storyline largely after high-profile (and sometimes, graphic) stories on pedophilia and sexual abuse of children on shows such as 60 Minutes and 20/20. Concerns were raised that a child may be reluctant to tell an adult that he/she had been sexually abused, especially because he/she may not be believed because of their age.

I never knew there was a time they couldn't see him (or, more accurately, didn't think he was real). Since I was only 4 in 1985, I guess that's not too surprising.

Now I will have to skip school to watch sesame Street .

Wow, Thank you Jon! That was exactly the kind of answer I was looking for! That pretty much explains it.

But now I have another question on the same subject. My friend told me that apparently at one point Snuffleupagus had a child of some kind, I do vaugelly remember seeing a snuffleupagus-like characther with a bonnet and a pacifier. Whats funny is that she told me apparently the characther was "killed off" when it was hit by a drunk driver. Is my friend totally hallucinating, or did sesame street actually have the balls to pull this one of?

I seriously doubt it. I know snuffy had a little sister ont he show for a while, but I don't think sesame street killed off characters with drunk drivers at any point.

@Annorax congratulations, I turned you in for harrasment. You are not derailing this forum as well as the last one. I can't stand people like you.

@Senori, thanks for the quick delete!

No, snuffy's little sister Alice isn't dead.

Thanks Dragon-Mayge hon, i reported the post as well. I hate to be a tattle-tale, but im just totally bored of having to go back and forth with trolls. It was fun the first 3,000 times, but now its just getting annoying. I'd like to just have a nice casual conversation with people, without having to explain and defend myself every friggin word I say.

Hmmm, I guess my friend was just hallucinating. I too could have sworn I saw the baby snuffleupagus characther within the past few months. I guess she must have heard it incorrectly. I couldn't find any info on yahoo about a characther on Sesame Street getting hit by a drunk driver at all.

Thanks so much Dragon and Plastik

Here's a page on Alice Snuffleupagus (that includes a picture), if anyone's interested. According to the page, there's also a Grandma Snuffleupagus, but I can't recall ever seeing that character.

Plastik's correct that Alice has never been hit by a car. That'd be freakin' traumatic for kids, I'd imagine. The most controversial subjects ever presented by Sesame Street that I can think of are the utterly ridiculous speculation about Bert and Ernies' sexual orientations and Kami, the HIV-positive Muppet. :b

According to a random site on the 'Net, an Elmo holiday special revealed that Grandma Snuffleupagus lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. This info is also available on the Wikipedia entry for Cincinnati, Ohio
