Uri Peleg's GB midrange splashing white for Doran (and teching in a random one-of hypnotic specter) was able to overcome the Heezy Red Fever piloted by Patrick Chapin to win the 2007 Championships in a 3-1 finale.
Israel's first player to T8 at a Pro-tour event goes on to win $40,000 and glory for the ages. Congrats to everyone!

I watched the entire top 8, and it's funny how he mised the singleton card that he needed to win the game. Peleg's MVP DEFINITELY was Riftsweeper, that thing stopped Chapin in the last 2 games.
Chapin, as a non sequitor, now has the longest stretch between Pro Tour top 8's.
Peleg's win prevents the same deck winning two years in a row and therefore only 2 different ones in the last 4 years.
This top 8 surely completely redefines the metagame-Doran and Heezy Red Fever clearly being top tier decks along with the Rock and maybe Big Mana.
Excellent Match, and the trick Chapin used in the upkeep with the Blast, gained him a turn but....The Hypnotic Specter came all along the way!!. It's a good thing that finally ISrael gets someone in the top 8 and Wins Wolrds!!.
Lotus: Nassif's survival in game 4 was akin to Jones' Lightning Helix in terms of "OMG WTF" momments in magic history. and even the commentators realized that Nassif was likely going to lose that game 5 when memories went on the stack, even if he had the last 2 cards in hand. it was a little better than a coin flip for Chapin to take that on the back of memories.
Chapin had g4 won if Peleg hadn't topped his single hippie to win, and all the matches were so good...

All I have to say is, where the hell is blue control?
Given the fact that there were 7 blue decks in the top 8 of Krakow, I would have expected more blue control in Worlds. I saw that Wafo-Tapa was piloting an updated Teachings build, but I don't know how he did. Anyway, wouldn't teachings or any type of blue control with counterspells just stomp this new Dragonstorm build? It did it before, back when the top 3 decks were DStorm, Teachings and Gruul. What makes this new DStorm able to beat control decks?

My friend played someone from NYC trying to run it in the NEC tourney, and completely stomped him.
I doubt it was the SAME decklist, but the guy never did ANYTHING.
If you counter the Lotus Bloom, the deck is kind of eh.
My friend didn't understand how control was nowhere to be found either.
The 'new tech' for Dstorm is Spinerock Knoll.
That and another 1 mana burn spell, I guess.

There were about 40 blueish decks, and they probably couldn't handle the fact that half the field was green/black, while only a handful of this red storm stuff was going around (and trashing the green/black)

This argument isn't valid. You are quoting BDM and Randy here, but what you fail to say, or seem to have misunderstood, is that [Jones] played perfectly to set himself up to topdeck the winning burn spell. I mean, BDM and Randy were all over that after game 4.
Obviously, the word "random" is always going to have a luck factor.

These aren't my calculations...but:
Quote from kcostell, from Magicthegathering forums »
Gabriel Nassif's odds of survival in the final ignite on game 5: 29.7&
his odds (if he had kept just the mountain): 46.9%
his odds (if he had kept both the mountain and the rift bolt): 50%
All I'm saying is that, while Nassif is undoubtedly a great player, it's hard to say that he deserved to win the tournament, and lost because of luck, when he made a mistake that greatly decreased his odds of winning game 5, and won G4 despite the odds being enormously stacked against him.

He had other outs as well...
I don't know exactly how many outs he had (because of sideboarding) but even if he hadn't topped the single hippy, Chapin didn't necessarily win.
Peleg did have other outs, but the odds are against him to topdeck any given one of those outs.
I don't think so. He left three Shriekmaws in and hadn't seen a single one, and he also had Cloudthresher, Eyeblight's Ending, and Profane Command along with the lone Specter. He had a solid chance of finding one.
this worlds was so stupid, but pat chapin was in no way favorite after board, srdude, pat chapen(and me with my big mouth:rofl:), were testing the matchup, and after board, booooooo
this worlds was so stupid....
I beg to differ. It showed us a new tier 1 deck in dragonstorm 2.0 and showed us the best deck in the format is some version of the rock. It also had one of the greatest matches ever in worlds, nassif vs. chapin. So in my opinion this worlds was quite awesome.

Lesurgo, I'm just saying that maybe Uri's chances were around 2/7 (about that?) of finding something, meaning while the odds were solid, Chapin had a better chance at winning. But I am pretty predisposed towards the guy, I like his stuff and follow him regularly. He also was very nice to me when I met him at Worlds. I actually told him I followed him every week (online, but I didn't say this), and he said, "What? Around my house?" And Flores, Heezy, and Nassif all cracked up at it.
It just goes to show how open the metagame was...originally, I had thought Rock was going to be very good against the top 3 of Sonic Boom, Pickles, and Mannequin and otherwise nothing else would be good, but now the decks are GB Midrange (Elf, Rock, and Doran variants), Dragonstorm, and Mannequin with the others (Big Mana, Sonic Boom, Mannequin, Pickles) following closely behind.
Also-Mikey, I know you were watching the Nassif/Chapin match...honestly, how could that not totally pump you up? In my 2-year career of competitive Magic, this ranks first, just ahead of Ruel v. Jones because I am more into it now, and also like Chapin very much.

tsk tsk tsk
trains thats called barning, something extremely looked down upon
honestly i dont get teh allure of pros, i beat them and lose to them on mtgo all the time, theirs nothing relaly special about it
Fooly, you don't need to be so harsh. These guys play magic as thier job. He's having a chance to meet the legends of the modern game. Barning is latching on to someone like a lost puppy trying to get information and play tips. from what I'm reading, he was just chatting it up with the pros.
and I agree, game 4 of the Gassy Knoll Semis was the most intense game I have seen since Jones/Ruel...I cannot wait for wizards to put that video up...

i was really much hopin that Chapin would be the Cha,pion so i'm kinda dissapointed with that!
also i feel bad fo Nassif cause it's a 2nd year in a row top 8 loosing, when he might have not loose had he left mountain and bolt in hand ... feel bad fo him! Nassif was the one that deserved the Champ Title!
also big ups to Mori as ma fav player fo making it into top8! that's a great success fo sum1 who have been suspended fo half a year!
and - oh yeah TOMOHARU SAITOU - YEAH BABY! NOW U HAVE THE TITLE! One more thing left to do - take Worlds 2008! ))
Peleg did have other outs, but the odds are against him to topdeck any given one of those outs.
Why is that?? He hadn't drawn any of his Black Commands, he still had the Hippie left, he could have drawn Shriekmaw, or any other removal spell to essentially win the game. A birds to block as well would have been fine. It just so happens that he drew the only singleton card in his deck.

Everyone focuses on this, but there were a lot of cards Uri could draw right there.
I think Chapin might have messed up on the turn he killed Doran with how he used his burn.
Congratulations to everyone in the top eight!
(i want some Colombian to Top 8)
Thanks to R&Doom For the Great Banner!
way to represent!
How did Nassif deserve it?
He should have lost g4 to the Ignite Memories, and he admitted he messed up the final game of the match by playing out the Mountain and Rift Bolt.
Anyways, congrats to Uri Peleg and the rest of the money finishers.
